A.P.R.I.L.
A: Amend: Amend soil when planting. We offer organic amendments for the types of plants we sell. Work deep into your native soil whenever you plant to increase soil tilthe and improve nutrient uptake to make the most of the plants you install! Besides amendments always use an organic starter fertilizer to inoculate your soils to activate soil!
P: Plant: April is the best month to find the largest selection of plants at Belmont. We grow the largest assortment of trees (shade, accent and fruit), shrubs (hedges, accents and roses), perennials in the valley and also carry the largest selection of veggies and seasonal color. So come by this month!
R: Raised Beds: If you have limited space, now is the best time to install raised beds. Not only for vegetable gardens but also for cut flower and herb gardens. Location is critical so pick spots that have 6 to 8 hours of full sun to maximize yields. Putting them in view of the patio and BBQ area also adds to the beauty and utility of your landscape.
I: Irrigation: April is the best time to check, repair and update your irrigation system. Check that all nozzles are clear and working and spraying the right direction! It's also a good time to modify older irrigation systems and convert them to drip systems where possible to deliver water more directly to wanted plants and less to weeds! For veggie beds, try using drip or soaker systems improves yields and to take away the worry of when to water, connect the hose to automatic controllers that are easily attached to your hoe bibs! As the weather warms, remember to increase the duration of the watering cycle time.
L: Landscape: April is a great time to Evaluate, cleanup, hedge, edge and freshen your landscape! If that tree in the corner isn't flourishing? Remove and replace it! Those overgrown shrubs? Prune or hedge them back! Major weed patches? Whack'em'! And put in a wanted plant instead to prevent those weeds from having their own area! Need some help? Give Belmont a call and we can assign a garden coach to visit your yard and give you some ideas for improvement or even prepare a new design!
